High Frequency Inverter vs Low Frequency Inverter: How to choose

An inverter is a device that converts direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) to meet the power needs of AC loads. According to topology, inverters can be categorized into high frequency inverters and low frequency inverters. High Frequency Inverter vs Low Frequency Inverter, which is better?Let’s start by understanding the difference between them.

What is high frequency inverter

High frequency solar inverter first through the high-frequency DC / DC conversion technology, low-voltage DC inverter for high-frequency low-voltage alternating current; and then after the high-frequency transformer boost, and then through the high-frequency rectifier and filter circuit rectified into the high-frequency DC usually more than 300V high-frequency DC, and finally through the frequency inverter circuit to get the 220V frequency alternating current for the use of the load.

What is low frquency inverter

The low frequency solar inverter firstly turns the DC into IF low-voltage AC, and then boosts it into 220V, 50Hz AC for the load through the IF transformer.

Differences between high frequency Inverters and low frequency inverters

High frequency inverters and low frequency inverters are two common types of inverters with distinct differences in their application, operating principles, and characteristics:

  • Weight

The same power inverter industrial frequency inverter is far heavier than the high-frequency inverter, high frequency inverter is small in size, light in weight, high in efficiency, low no-load load, but can’t be connected to a full inductive load, and overload capacity is poor.

Low frequency inverter weight more than High frequency inverter weight
  • Working principle

High frequency inverter circuit is more complex, high frequency inverter usually consists of IGBT high-frequency rectifier, battery converter, inverter and bypass.IGBT can be controlled by controlling the drive added to the gate to control the opening and closing, IGBT rectifier switching frequency is usually in a few kilohertz to dozens of kilohertz, or even as high as hundreds of kilohertz, much higher than the low frequency inverters, and is therefore known as high frequency inverters.

The low frequency inverter is designed on the principle of traditional analog circuits and consists of a thyristor (SCR) rectifier, an IGBT inverter, a bypass and an IF step-up isolation transformer. Because of its rectifier and transformer operating frequency are low frequency 50Hz, as the name suggests, called low frequency inverter.

  • Conversion efficiency

Industrial frequency inverters do not have the high conversion efficiency of high frequency inverters because the complicated hardware analog circuits are burned into the microprocessor to control the operation of the inverter by means of a software program. In addition to the greatly reduced size of the high frequency inverter, its conversion efficiency is also improved.

High Frequency Inverter vs Low Frequency Inverter-Conversion efficiency

Applications of high frequency inverter

High frequency inverters are widely used in applications requiring portability, high efficiency and fast response due to their advantages of small size, light weight, high efficiency as well as fast response speed. For example, aerospace, military equipment, new energy vehicles and other fields have high requirements on the volume, weight and efficiency of inverters, so high frequency inverters have a wide range of application prospects in these fields. In addition, high frequency inverters can also be used in renewable energy fields such as solar power generation systems and wind power generation systems to realize green and environmentally friendly energy conversion.

Appliacation of low frequency inverter

Due to its stable output waveform and low electromagnetic interference, the low frequency inverter is suitable for applications that require high power quality and are sensitive to the electromagnetic environment. For example, precision instruments, medical equipment, communication equipment and other fields usually choose IF inverters as power supply equipment. In addition, low frequency inverters are also a good choice for applications that require long time stable operation and do not require high volume and weight.

High Frequency Inverter vs Low Frequency Inverter

High Frequency InverterLow Frequency Inverter

EfficiencyHigher (usually above 90%) Slightly lower (usually around 85%)
CostLower Higher
Applicable ScenariosHousehold appliances, small commercial systems Industrial applications, large commercial systems
Conversion technology Voltage conversion via high-frequency transformer Voltage conversion via low-frequency transformer
Shock resistance Weak, difficult to withstand large starting currents Stronger, able to withstand large startin
Reliability High, but less stable in extreme environments High for harsh environments
Heat dissipation requirement Heat dissipation is relatively simple Heat dissipation requirement is high, need good heat dissipation design
Noise level Lower, due to less noise from high-frequency operation Higher, due to louder low-frequency transformer operation
Lifespan Shorter, subject to component durability Longer, suitable for long periods of high load operation
Application examples Portable power supplies, solar energy systems, computer power supplies UPS power supplies, large motor drives, heavy industrial equipment

When choosing an inverter, users should consider it comprehensively according to their own needs and usage environment. For applications that require high power quality and are sensitive to the electromagnetic environment, you can choose an Low Frequency inverter; while for applications that require portability, high efficiency and fast response, High frequency inverters are more advantageous.
